TheBigDay2012  > Trucks > Pickups
I had no intention of collecting photos of old pickups or old heavier trucks. However, when you've got a camera jammed into your front pants pocket or nestled in the back seat of your car you will inevitably wind up with exactly those sorts of pictures. Only recently did I realize that most of the trucks I've run across were post-war Fords, Chevys or GMCs. Naturally, there is the odd Dodge here and there, and one spectacularly brutish Power Wagon tow truck found on the outskirts of Grass Valley, California. You will find a set of photos here of a Chevy flatbed farm truck that was clearly assaulted with a grinder in order to speed the aging process. Well, it didn't seem to do anything except to scour the factory original paint off, opening wounds to the bare metal. The metal has rusted over and is now looking a little like scabs on the wounded elbows and knees of beginning street skaters. It turns out that I love these old trucks. Actually, as much as anything, I love how they smell... that is, the un-restored ones. There is a very special scent that contains the vapors of aged greases and oils, tire rubber, old fabrics and the mouldering wiring, gaskets and seat upholstery. It is quite perfume-like to me and takes me back to a late 1930s Chevy pickup my family owned from about 1956 to 1961 (SEE 1st PHOTO HERE)

Me, my older brother and our grandfather. We were preparing the back yard for grass at our new home in Portola, California in the summer of 1957. We're standing in the bed of a pre-war Chevy purchased from a neighbor for $50 in about 1955 and sold in 1961 for half that amount. The sawdust was a giveaway provided by a lumber mill in nearby Calpine, just at the intersection of State Route 89 and Highway 49.
